Works4U: New start for Bilal

Works4U is an employment support programme designed to provide residents in the West Midlands with opportunities to upskill, overcome personal challenges, move into work, and gain qualifications.

The programme provides wrap-around support to help you find the right opportunity, while breaking down any barriers that could be holding you back from finding work.

One participant who recently completed the programme is Bilal from Birmingham.

Bilal's Story

Bilal arrived on our Works4U programme in Birmingham after a significant spell of unemployment. He told us how he’d been on various training courses before, but that they never led to him securing a full-time role.

With the support of both his tutor and keyworker, we were able to identify any barriers to employment for Bilal. One of these was a lack of confidence in interview situations and not being able to highlight his strengths and key skills.

Bilal reflected on the support he’d received, and praised the support of the team in helping him regain his confidence.

I've had the opportunity to do many courses before, but I've never had such a dedicated team helping and supporting me the same way I did at Works4U.

For the first time, I felt these people really cared about me. I feel the programme has helped me quite a lot to believe in myself and identify my strengths and skills. It has exceeded my expectations.

Developing Key Skills

Bilal also spoke about the wrap-round support he received from his keyworker on the programme, and how he learnt to develop some key skills when in interview situations and how to think critically when in the work environment.

I now find it easier to identify my worth. I have also noticed I have developed my critical thinking and feel more comfortable questioning scenarios or people when needed and appropriate.

New Job Secured

Not only did Bilal receive wrap-around support from his keyworker to improve his interview skills and confidence, but he also landed a new full-time role on completion of the Works4U programme, as a Shift Manager at a local supermarket.

The support I have received has helped me build my confidence and self-esteem. I strongly believe the sessions and the wrap-around helped me a lot to be able to succeed in my interview, where I successfully secured a new job offer.
