Works4U: A fresh start for Calvin

Works4U is an employment support programme designed to provide residents in the West Midlands with opportunities to upskill, overcome personal challenges, move into work, and gain qualifications.

The programme provides wrap-around support to help you find the right opportunity, while breaking down any barriers that could be holding you back from finding work.

One participant who recently completed the programme is Calvin from Walsall.

Calvin's Story

Calvin arrived on our Works4U programme in Wolverhampton after recently becoming unemployed from his role within security. He told us that despite applying for various roles in this industry, he hadn’t been able to get past the application stage of the hiring process.

This had badly affected his overall confidence, and he wasn’t sure where to turn to for further support.

With the help of both his tutor and keyworker, we were able to identify the barriers to employment for Calvin and put a plan in place to help him.

I knew that I needed to get back into work as soon as possible. I had worked in security before and had the badge and experience, but for some reason, I just couldn't get past making applications.

This knocked my confidence and I wasn't sure what I could do. The team at Works4U were amazing though and nothing was too much trouble. Anytime I needed some support, they were there. I just needed that little push and for someone to believe in me.

They allowed me to look at what was holding me back and gave me the tools to improve. No judgements were made and there was a really great atmosphere every time I walked through the door.

Building Confidence

Our team worked with Calvin to identify that one of his biggest challenges was not knowing how to express confidence and being able to “sell” himself during a job interview.

We identified his strengths and experience as big factors that could help him when in a job interview situation, and worked on expressing himself in a confident manner.

I learnt how to become better at interviews and learnt that I could come across as someone who is confident and give the employer lots of reasons as to why they should hire me.

I started to see myself for who I really was and all of the experience I have, and learnt how to turn that into strengths.

New Job Secured

Not only did Calvin receive wrap-around support from his keyworker to improve his interview skills and confidence, but he also landed a new full-time role on completion of the Works4U programme.

Calvin reflected on his time with us and how we supported him into a new full-time role within his chosen industry.

The whole experience was excellent. I have attended other training programmes before, but for the first time, I think a team did what they said they were going to do.

I felt supported and not on my own. They made introductions to an employer, helped with my interview preparations and I got the job.

My keyworker was excellent and without him, I truly think I wouldn't have got the job.
