Wendy Bowen, Personal Assistant at The University of Birmingham, recently completed the ILM Level 3 Leadership & Management qualification.

ILM Level 3 Leadership & Management

This qualification is offered as part of our online distance learning provision. It allows learners the flexibility to complete units in their own time with access to our online learning platform.

This level 3 qualification provides learners with the knowledge needed to organise, manage and motivate team members. It builds confidence in the ability to perform in a leadership role, as you learn the tools and techniques needed to become an effective leader.

Wendy explains her experience with the qualification and how it’s benefitted her role.

What made you want to take part in this course?

I have been a Team Leader/Office Manager for the last 10 years. The main reason I wanted to complete a course was because I had no formal qualifications prior to this distance learning course.

Due to the pandemic, I was furloughed and saw this as an opportunity to get back into an educational environment and gain a qualification to substantiate what I know I’m capable of.

What did you enjoy most about the ILM course?

I think focusing on getting back into some formal education. Initially, I was unsure if I’d be able to do it. With the help of my assessor, Rebecca, and the support provided throughout the course, I felt confident. I am even thinking of tackling a further qualification.

What new skills and knowledge have you learned?

I have learned how to write down what I practice. I think about the processes involved in my job and I am able to articulate so that others are able to understand it better.

In relation to the course units, I also learned to shorten my answers so that they amounted to the correct quantity of words. I was able to use the marking as an indication of how much I should be writing which will help with my writing skills in future and if I go on to further qualifications.

The course also made me think more about the reasons and outcomes of what I do in my job role. For example, when completing the assignment on disciplinary, it made me think about the process and formality and why it is so important.

Did you find that the course met your expectations?

Yes – it absolutely did.

Did you find that the course was challenging enough?

As mentioned before, I initially thought that the course was going to be too challenging. However, when I got used to the writing style and received the feedback from my assessor, I was able to adjust and it became a lot clearer. I received great support and was able to find my own style when completing units.

How has this course helped you to progress in the workplace?

Completing this qualification boosted my confidence. I now feel that I am able to evidence my knowledge of leadership & management.

I am also still furloughed, so in the unfortunate event that I don’t go back to University of Birmingham, I feel more confident that I will be able to show employers my ability to be effective in my job role.

Would you recommend The B2W Group to others?

Yes I would definitely recommend them to others. When I was looking at other courses, I was put off by the hoops you needed to jump through to do the course. The B2W Group made the process a lot easier and once I was enrolled on the course I received all of the material I needed and was able to progress in my own time.
