Our Building Futures programme provides employability support for those aged 19 – 24 in South Yorkshire, along with key digital qualifications.

Each learner receives individualised, tailored support to help them achieve their goal and move closer to their dream job. Working with their own mentor and keyworker, they have access to tailored packages of support to help build their future.

One learner who recently completed the programme was Owain Wittwer.

Owain's Story

Owain arrived on our Building Futures programme with a lack of confidence in his communication skills, which he felt was holding him back from finding sustainable full-time employment.

He also had an interest in online games design and learning how these were built and developed, so took the opportunity to enrol onto our fully funded employment support programme in South Yorkshire.

"I applied to the Building Futures programme so that I would have the opportunity to refresh myself on skills that I have learned in the past and to learn new skills that might help me find a job, or to do well within the workplace.

"I also wanted to work on weaknesses that I felt I had, such as communication and what I needed to do and say during interviews."

Confidence Increased & Other Benefits

Owain worked with his dedicated keyworker and tutor throughout the programme to develop key communication skills, which was helped by the virtual classroom environment where each participant on the programme is encouraged to contribute to group discussions.

He also mentioned how the Building Futures programme also helped introduce a proper sleep schedule into his routine, knowing that he had to get a certain amount of sleep at night so he could be refreshed and ready for the next day of learning throughout the programme.

"I feel like my confidence has improved as the programme has helped me build on and improve my communication skills. It has also provided me with better interview preparation techniques than I had been offered in the past.

"The one thing that I enjoyed most during the programme was being able to create an online game the way that I wanted to.

"The programme also benefited me by being able to get a better sleep schedule that enabled me to get enough sleep for the course."
