Building Futures: Jay's Story

Our Building Futures programme provides employability support for those aged 19 – 24 in South Yorkshire, along with key digital qualifications.

Each learner receives individualised, tailored support to help them achieve their goal and move closer to their dream job. Working with their own mentor and keyworker, they have access to tailored packages of support to help build their future.

One learner who recently completed the programme was Jay from Sheffield.

Jay's Story

Jay arrived on our Building Futures programme with a lack of confidence in his social skills. He was reluctant to join in with group discussions at first, but showed real promise when it came to tasks that gave him the chance to use his digital and IT skills.

After successfully completing the programme, we spoke to Jay to ask him about his experience, and the challenges he faced before he started.

"Before the course, I struggled a lot with communication skills. I hadn't worked in a social setting in a long time and the course really helped me come out of my shell.

"I started this course in hopes that I could refresh some of my digital skills, while also building upon my communication skills."

Improving Career Prospects

Jay also told us how he’s now looking forward to pursuing an entry-level digital position as he looks to kickstart his career following completion of the Building Futures programme, gaining some relevant digital qualifications, and how the course helped provide him with some much needed structure in his life.

"Before the course, I didn't really have a routine and I was a little bit lost with what to do with my days.

"This course gave me something to work towards and gave me some structure in my life, which has helped fixed my bad sleeping habits. I'm now looking to further my learning and eventually gain an entry position into the industry.

"I've gained more confidence in my digital skills and I'm now looking to further build upon these skills."
