Works4U: New skills and improved confidence for Angus

Works4U is an employment support programme designed to provide residents in the West Midlands with opportunities to upskill, overcome personal challenges, move into work, and gain qualifications.

The programme provides wrap-around support to help you find the right opportunity, while breaking down any barriers that could be holding you back from finding work.

One participant who recently completed the programme is Angus from Birmingham.

Angus' Story

Angus arrived on our Works4U programme in Birmingham after a lengthy spell of unemployment. He told us that despite applying for various roles in the past, he’d struggled to make it past the interview stages.

With the help of both his tutor and keyworker, we were able to identify the barriers to employment for Angus and put a plan in place to help him.

They equipped me with the skills I needed and guided me through every stage in my journey of job searching. They were also able to give me insightful advice whenever I needed it.

Improved Interview Skills

Our team worked with Angus to identify that one of his biggest challenges was not knowing how to best express himself and his strengths during face-to-face interviews with employers.

Angus told us how this helped him to boost his confidence and understand more about what a potential employer could be looking for during an interview.

Interview skills during the many skills workshops were the main thing I learnt on the programme and what I enjoyed most. My keyworker and tutor equipped me with the the skills I needed to present myself more confidently in front of potential employers.

It really helped me to understand what employers are expecting from potential employees. In return, I can adjust my expectations, strategy and personal plan accordingly.

Angus reflected on his time with us and how his keyworker and Tutor supported him throughout the programme and helped introduce him to a number of employers to speak to about local job opportunities.
