National Apprenticeship Week: Luca's Story

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating and highlighting some of our recent learners who have progressed into full-time paid apprenticeships in their chosen industries.

An apprenticeship is a great way to combine both practical and hands-on experience in a job role that interests you, with the certifications that employers are looking for.

Plus, you get the added benefit of being able to “earn as you learn”.

Our digital & IT apprenticeships are delivered by Just IT – with apprenticeships available in Data, IT and Digital Marketing at some of the UK’s most recognised companies, such as Sainsbury’s, Harrod’s and Google.

One learner who recently completed an apprenticeship in Software Development is Luca Pirolo.

Luca's story

Luca’s journey in software and coding started at high school, where he discovered a passion for creating apps and coding in his spare time.

After finishing his high school education, he got in touch with our digital and IT apprenticeships provider, Just IT, to discuss the possible entry routes into the software engineering industry.

Luca decided to apply for a paid apprenticeship with London based IT support provider, Transputec, as a Junior Software Developer Apprentice.

After successfully landing the apprenticeship, Luca was able to learn new programming languages and further his overall knowledge on mobile application development.

"The structured learning aspect of the program greatly complimented my on-the-job responsibilities. There were numerous workshops where I learned new programming languages and technologies, which I could directly apply to my role within the company."

Real-world experience

Luca also explained how the hands-on experience during his apprenticeship has benefited him, as well as how working with senior colleagues has helped to further enhance his overall knowledge of software engineering.

"The apprenticeship has been incredibly educational, broadening my understanding of software and engineering.

"By collaborating with more senior team members, I've been able to soak up a wealth of knowledge. Furthermore, the real-world experience I've acquired has significantly enhanced my skills as an engineer."

Full-time role secured

Not only did Luca successfully complete his software engineering apprenticeship, but he was soon offered a full-time role at Transputec, where he still works today as a fully-fledged Software Engineer.

He praised the experience that his apprenticeship provided and also the mix of practical experience alongside his studies.

"This apprenticeship allowed me to engage in my dream job, further my education, and earn a degree simultaneously, making it an ideal solution.

"The interplay between formal education and practical application has significantly enriched my work and overall experience."
