Building Futures in South Yorkshire: Shai's Story

Our Building Futures programme provides employability support for those aged 19 – 24 in South Yorkshire, along with key digital qualifications.

Each learner receives individualised, tailored support to help them achieve their career goals and move closer to their dream job. Working with their own mentor and keyworker, they also have access to tailored packages of support to help build their future.

One learner who recently completed the programme was Shai Fay.

About Shai

Shai arrived on our Building Futures programme with a desire to not only boost his IT skills, but to add some structure and routine to his week.

He also expressed that he’d experienced some struggles with his confidence when speaking in front of a group, something which he also wanted to improve upon.

"I applied to the Building Futures programme to improve my IT skills, but it also allowed me to focus on my career path, putting a step by step plan in place. I also learnt a lot more about working in the IT world in general."

Forming a routine

Throughout the course, Shai grew in his overall confidence, and was able to add some much needed structure to his daily life. This is something which he appreciated, as well as the improvement in his social skills that he experienced.

"This course has allowed me to form a routine within my life and develop my social skills, especially when it comes to presenting."

Supported to succeed

Our Building Futures team in South Yorkshire are dedicated to improving the lives of our participants, with individual support provided by one of our learning support advisors for each participant on the programme. This is something which benefited Shai, who told us how much he appreciated the support he received.

"The thing I've enjoyed the most about the course is just how much you learn and the vast amount of support you get when doing the course. The tutors and the whole team were very welcoming and helped me with any problems I was having."
