Works4U is an employment support programme designed to provide residents in the West Midlands with opportunities to upskill, overcome personal challenges, move into work, and gain qualifications.

The programme provides wrap-around support to help you find the right opportunity, while breaking down any barriers that could be holding you back from finding work.

One participant who recently completed the programme is Matthew from Coventry.

Matthew's story

Matthew arrived on our Works4U programme in Coventry after struggling to find a suitable role in his local area, with an overall lack of confidence in his digital skills that he felt was hindering his ability to apply for roles online.

With the help of our team, we were able to help Matthew identify his barriers to employment and put a plan in place to help him overcome these.

"The programme has really supported me to develop my confidence by attending group classes and improve my digital skills.

"I am more knowledgeable about what I can expect outside the classroom and more confident in my transferable skills. I can now update my CV independently, research and apply for job roles online and present myself well at interviews."

"Extensive support received"

Matthew revealed the aspects of the programme that he most enjoyed, and how the sessions he attended quickly helped him to improve his overall skillset and job aspirations.

"What I enjoyed most about the programme was the Jobs Clubs and the digital skills sessions with my advisors. I also appreciated the extensive support I received whenever I needed help."

"Part of a family"

Matthew also reflected on the welcome he received when he first arrived on the programme, and how the team quickly settled any nerves he had about joining us by listening to and understanding his situation from the outset.

"My keyworkers made me feel like part of a family. I was welcomed and treated with kindness from our first meeting. I felt really listened to and supported throughout the programme.

"Cristian and Doreen also helped me to understand how to write and update my CV, apply for job roles on my own, and supported me in improving my digital skills using a computer."

"Informed career choice"

When asked about the support he received from his tutor, Matthew reflected on how they were able to help him make informed choices about the direction he wished his career to take upon completion of the programme.

"The lessons with my tutor gave me insights into warehouse work and built up my confidence which helped me to decide to find work in this industry.

"I also understood employment contracts better and learned more about different work industries. This helped me make an informed career choice in the end and do something that I enjoy.

"The main thing was that I built up my confidence and gained awareness of what to expect outside the classroom. I also obtained a general view of different jobs, which enabled me to do something that I am passionate about."

"Using the action plan provided"

Not only did Matthew successfully complete the Works4U programme, but he also managed to secure a new job role, working in his chosen industry. He told us about his new role and how the development plan we put in place has helped him to gain full-time employment.

"I have secured a job thanks to this programme, which is testament to the amount of work I've put into developing myself using the action plan and advice provided.

"As I improved my digital skills, I feel confident operating the computers at work which is a crucial part of my job."

Congratulations again, Matthew! We wish you all the very best in your new role!
