Works4U is an employment support programme designed to provide residents in the West Midlands with opportunities to upskill, overcome personal challenges, move into work, and gain qualifications.

The programme provides wrap-around support to help you find the right opportunity, while breaking down any barriers that could be holding you back from finding work.

One participant who recently completed the programme is Olawuyi from Coventry.

Olawuyi's story

Olawuyi arrived on our Works4U programme in Coventry after a significant period of unemployment. Her previous jobs were supplied by an agency, which had stopped referring work for her, so she was now at a crossroads.

With the help of our team, we were able to help Olawuyi identify her barriers to employment and put a plan in place to help her overcome these.

Before I joined this programme, I was unemployed and only worked for an agency which stopped giving me work. I knew I needed to improve my skills to secure a permanent work contract, and this programme helped me achieve what I needed.

I received a lot of support from the Works4U staff in Coventry, they did their best to make sure I achieved my aims.

"Supported throughout my journey"

Olawuyi revealed the aspects of the programme that she most enjoyed, and how the sessions she attended with both her tutor and learning support advisors quickly helped her to improve her overall skillset and knowledge of the local job market.

My tutor (Chris) helped me in many ways to understand how to prepare for an interview, look for a job, and to know more about different work industries.

My keyworkers (Cristian and Doreen) worked closely with me and supported me throughout my journey of finding a job. I always looked forward to my appointments with them.

I enjoyed everything about this programme, including the classes, the job clubs and improving my digital skills.

"Much more confident"

Olawuyi also reflected on how her confidence has since improved thanks for the advice and support she received from the team in Coventry, and specifically referenced the interview techniques she learnt throughout her time on the programme.

Before I joined, I felt that I could not attend an interview, as I was anxious and not able to express and present myself confidently..

Now I am much more confident and have since attended various interviews, following the techniques I learnt, and they went really well.

"I felt more prepared"

Not only did Olawuyi successfully complete the Works4U programme, improving her confidence and overall skillset, but she also managed to secure two new job roles, working in the commercial cleaning industry.

She told us about her new job roles and described the main things she benefited from by enrolling on the Works4U programme.

I have secured two cleaning jobs on permanent contracts. One is working as a Mobile Cleaner with Coventry City Council, and the other is a cleaning role at a local restaurant.

I felt more prepared before starting my first job as I knew what to expect thanks to the classes I attended that were delivered by Chris.

The main things I learnt on this programme was how to apply for job roles online using a computer, create a CV and present myself well at an interview. I improved my confidence and I feel much better now that I have some security in terms of income.

Congratulations again, Olawuyi! We wish you all the very best in your new roles!
