Works4U is an employment support programme designed to provide residents in the West Midlands with opportunities to upskill, overcome personal challenges, move into work, and gain qualifications.

The programme provides wrap-around support to help you find the right opportunity, while breaking down any barriers that could be holding you back from finding work.

One participant who recently completed the programme is Cinthia from Coventry.

Cinthia's Story

Cinthia arrived on our Works4U programme in Coventry after becoming frustrated when applying for jobs herself online. She had spent a significant amount of time being unemployed and was going through a tough period, experiencing low morale and a lack of confidence in her ability to find a new job.

With the support of both her tutor and keyworker, we were able to identify the barriers she had to finding employment and worked with Cinthia to address these.

Cinthia reflected on the support she’d received, as well as looking back at how she felt before joining our Works4U programme.

I was let down by my previous employer and faced unemployment for a couple of months, which made me lose my confidence. I had quite a few barriers which included low morale, as I was not getting anywhere on my own securing a job.

Attending the Works4U programme in Coventry helped me gain the confidence to re-enter the job market. Attending the group classes was important to develop expertise in the workplace, and to better understand concepts such as health and safety, conflict resolution and teamwork.

Additionally, I was guided on how to apply effectively for job roles and learnt about the most common errors when creating a CV, such as simply copying the job description.

Support Received From Keyworker

Cinthia also spoke in great detail about the wrap-round support she received from her keyworker on the programme, and described the positive impact this had on her in terms of changing her mindset and putting a plan in place to help her find employment.

I really enjoyed the sessions with my keyworker, Cristian, as he helped me build a clear and smart career path. The 1-2-1 job clubs I attended with him supported me to secure sustainable employment.

The sessions with him were extremely helpful as he was able to advise me what steps I should take in terms of finding a job and breaking down the barriers I was facing in finding employment.

He also informed me about the in-work support provided by Works4U and the opportunity to study for a Level 3 qualification in Leadership and Management, which will help me work in a managerial position in the future.

Key Lessons From Tutor

Not only did Cinthia receive wrap-around support from her keyworker, but her tutor also delivered multiple lessons designed to teach her some key employability skills, which she says also helped when it came to boosting her confidence.

My tutor, Jonathan, delivered outstanding lessons and helped me understand different concepts such as teamwork, conflict resolution and keeping stakeholders engaged. He is very friendly and has a positive attitude which kept me motivated.

The sessions he delivered were very interactive and I'm now more confident talking in front of others.

Increased Confidence & New Job Secured

The support from both her keyworker and tutor on the Works4U programme was truly life-changing for Cinthia, who told us in her own words how this led to her securing a new full-time role in her local area.

I feel much more confident after this course, as I achieved my goals in terms of developing a professional CV which I am really happy with, improved my speaking confidence in front of others and expressed myself well. I also became more positive in terms of job searching, creating effective applications which resulted in sustainable employment with career progression opportunities.

One of the main things that I enjoyed about this programme is that I learnt lifelong skills in terms of updating my CV independently, as well as researching and applying to job roles effectively so that I can secure interviews and employment.

The programme supported me step by step in becoming more independent and securing employment with Coventry City Council in an administrative role.

Congratulations Cinthia! We wish you all the very best in your new role!
