Matt Daley from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, is one of our LGV driving tutors and teaches our LGV and HGV driving bootcamps in Greater London, North Tyne and West England.

In this short blog, we find out a little more about Matt and his experience as a former HGV driver, as well as finding out what advice he’d share for those who are thinking of signing up to one of our driving bootcamps.

Key facts:

"HGV drivers really are the backbone of the country, so to help get more drivers qualified and into work as HGV/LGV drivers is extremely satisfying for me."

So Matt, why did you want to become a Tutor?

I’ve always felt like this was something that I was good at and something that I always wanted to do. I get a lot of job satisfaction from it and I feel like I’ve made a real difference to someone’s life when they complete the course.

What courses do you currently teach?

I tutor those who have joined our LGV/HGV driving bootcamps. We do a 12 week programme and they come to us with essentially just a car licence and then we put them through their theory tests.

There’s also three practical tests for them to get through as well.

What's your favourite thing about being a Tutor?

Just knowing that I’m helping people change their lives for the better.

Whether it’s career development or it’s getting them back into a career where they’ve been out of work for a little while, I feel like it enhances people’s lives, not just for them, but of course for their family around them as well.

And not only that, I feel like I’m also doing my bit for the country.

HGV drivers really are the backbone of the country, so to help get more drivers qualified and into work as HGV/LGV drivers is extremely satisfying for me.

Is there a particular lesson you enjoy teaching your learners?

I think there’s a common misconception that LGV/HGV drivers just drive around the country listening to the radio all day.

With the learners on our course, I try to stress that you’re not just a HGV driver, you’re a professional driver. It’s taking you six tests to get behind this wheel, so you need to become a professional.

We are very highly regulated as HGV drivers. We’re actually more regulated than pilots!

So for the amount of qualifications that you’re going to need to get yourself behind that wheel, I try to drill that into them a little bit and say “act professionally” because you’re not just a driver, you’re a professional driver. There’s a big difference, a huge difference.

What tips can you pass on about life as a HGV/LGV driver?

You can expect long shifts, sometimes throughout the night, and a lot of time spent on your own. Making sure to prepare and eat right and getting some regular exercise are all important things to consider.

Another important part is the mental health side of it, because it is quite a lonely job. You’re on your own for potentially 15 hours a day, so, if there’s anything on your mind at that stage, then that seat can become quite lonely.

I think driver health and wellbeing is a real big part of what I enjoy teaching about.

I like to give my learners the ability to be able to deal with those situations because, well, it’s just nice to know that there’s, always something or someone that you can turn to when you’re in that predicament.
