The Best Christmas Adverts of 2018
It’s almost Christmas! We’re almost halfway through December and with the festive holiday fast approaching, we have rounded up our favourite Christmas adverts of 2018, in no particular order.
McDonald’s – #ReindeerReady
McDonald’s took a clever approach on their Christmas advert this year. The heart-warming advert took us on an adventure with Santa delivering presents to houses. Each time he emerges from the homes, the reindeer are left disappointed when families have been leaving treats for Santa but not for them.
Santa, feeling sympathy for the reindeer, is seen walking into McDonald’s to purchase a sack full of carrots which are referred to as “reindeer treats”. There is no way you can watch this without smiling!
John Lewis – #EltonJohnLewis
This year’s John Lewis advert features the famous English singer, Elton John. The advert, The Boy & The Piano, explores his career in music and how it all began.
It shows a montage of his life, which is visualised chronologically and goes backwards in time until the moment he receives his grandmother’s piano for Christmas as a child. Elton John commented, “The John Lewis Christmas campaign has so many warm memories for me and my family. It’s been a lovely opportunity for me to reflect on my life in music and the incredible journey I have been on, and how first playing my Grandmother’s piano marks the moment when music came into my life”.
The message behind the advert is that the piano was more than just a gift to Elton John and there are certain gifts that will be treasured forever.
Waitrose – Fast Forward
Waitrose broke their tradition, releasing a series of Christmas adverts for 2018 rather than focusing on just one. A particular advert that stood out was their collaboration with John Lewis.
In this advert, we see a family watching the new John Lewis ad starring Elton John. The mother becomes impatient, asking to fast forward until the end of the advert. Their reason behind the rush is because they had Waitrose stollen that they couldn’t wait to eat.
The father even funnily comments on how he prefers the penguin advert.
Iceland- Say Hello to Rang-tan
Iceland used their Christmas advert as an opportunity to bring light to the palm oil industry and how it is destroying habitats and endangering the lives of orangutans.
The emotional cartoon features a young child who is questioning why an orangutan is in her bedroom destroying her items. The orangutan shares their story, revealing the horrible truth of its own home being destroyed by humans for palm oil.
Iceland has removed palm oil from all of their own products and we hope other supermarkets can do the same!
Boots – #GiftsThatGetThem
The Boots ad focuses on a mother and her daughter and their complicated relationship. We can see that during the advert, they just do not seem to get each other. The mother is seen telling the daughter to remove her makeup, whilst the daughter uses all of her perfume ensuring that it’s empty.
Fast-forward, the daughter sees her mother performing ‘She’s The One’ by Robbie Williams but with a twist. Instead, they are singing ‘She’s My Mum’. The daughter then understands her mother’s passion to perform and seems to be inspired by her. She later gives her mum a thoughtful gift of red lipstick for when she next performs.
Asda – Bring Christmas Home
Asda cleverly promotes hundreds of Asda and George products throughout its Christmas advert. Santa is first seen launching a Christmas pudding and the advert then cuts to a swarm of festive looking people that have faces full of joy.
It includes the preparation of a Christmas dinner, the activity of gift giving and bringing home a Christmas tree. Basically, everything that reminds you of Christmas, they have it in there!
Aldi – Kevin the Carrot
Kevin the Carrot is back again with another festive advert! This year, Aldi released multiple adverts. One advert appears to be a reference to the Coca-Cola adverts. It features a festive truck driven by Kevin that looks very similar to the Coco-Cola truck. The truck is then struck by an avalanche and ends with Kevin almost falling off the edge of a cliff, with the hashtag #SaveKevin. A real cliff hanger!
Coca-Cola got involved with the hashtag on Twitter, offering a helping hand.

Another advert shows Kevin going against a villain, Pascal the Parsnip, in an effort to save his family from being part of Christmas dinner.
Sainsbury’s – The Big Night
The Sainsbury’s Christmas campaign, directed by The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey, showcased a fun advert of a primary school taking part in a Christmas show.
The Big Night generates a range of emotions along with funny moments that will make you chuckle.
The highlight of the advert was definitely the child dressed as a plug socket that launched themselves into the wall to light up the Christmas tree. This scene resulted in many memes being created on social media.
