Our Building Futures programme provides employability support for those aged 19 – 24 in South Yorkshire, along with key digital qualifications.

Each learner receives individualised, tailored support to help them achieve their goal and move closer to their dream job. Working with their own mentor and keyworker, they have access to tailored packages of support to help build their future.

One learner who recently completed the programme was Yasser Baqi from Sheffield.

Yasser's Story

Yasser was first introduced to our Building Futures programme in South Yorkshire when he attended a local jobs fair event.

He explained to our advisors that he lacked confidence in interviews, with his nerves getting the better of him. He also expressed an interest in learning more about cyber security, data analysis, programming and web design, as these were all areas he wanted to develop skills and forge a career in.

"The idea of getting multiple qualifications to help me get into web design, data and cyber security really interested me. I decided to apply for the programme as I believed the qualifications I would obtain would open doors in terms of potential career opportunities.

"The onboarding process was very personal. I met with the course coordinator one-to-one in their office, where they asked me about my career aspirations and my desire to get into data analysis."

Key Skills & Confidence Boost

During the employability unit of the programme, Yasser was able to learn key interview techniques and said he benefited from the support of his keyworker throughout the course.

"My interview skills have definitely been improved as well as my overall confidence when in interview situations, allowing me to communicate effectively in a concise manner.

"My confidence has definitely improved and I am also a lot more sociable than I was before the programme."

Cybersecurity, Web Design & Programming

Yasser reflected on each unit he completed during the Building Futures programme and explained how each area helped better inform and steer him towards his career goals.

"I enjoyed every aspect of the programme as I got something out of every part of it. I was also able to improve my communication, teamwork, and leadership skills from the employability unit."

Cybersecurity

"Cyber security was a career pathway I was interested in and the insight I gained from that section allowed me to make a more informed decision about my career."

Programming & Games Design

"This was my first interaction with graphics-based programming languages. I really enjoyed this and was quite proud of the maze game I created in less than a week. I would definitely like to develop my own game as a hobby later down the line."

Website Design

"Website design was also a very fun experience and got me interested in HTML coding. During this unit, I was able to develop my own website about mythologies from around the world from scratch."

Course Completed & New Job Secured!

Not only did Yasser successfully complete our Building Futures programme, gaining key employability skills and a number of digital qualifications to add to his CV, but he has since managed to secure a new full-time role working in digital and IT.

"I have since been offered a job as a Data Analyst for a company in Sheffield. I definitely think the interview process wouldn't have been as easy and smooth had I not taken part in ths programme."

Congratulations Yasser, and the very best of luck in your new role!
