It can be difficult to see that silver lining when you’re in a bit of a rut. Whether you’re suffering from any mental health issues or you’re just not feeling 100%, it’s extremely important that everyone sets aside some time for themselves.

Everyone has different ways of coping when life gets tough. We’ve put together a list of self-care tips you can practice that will improve your emotional wellbeing.

In such a fast-paced world it can seem like almost like a chore to set some time for yourself, let’s start with some things that can be done in less than five minutes:

  • Take deep breaths
  • Lie down
  • Drink a glass of water (or Vimto, if you’re in the B2W offices!)
  • Write down a list of things that make you happy
  • Look at a photo of someone/something that makes you happy (here’s Lenny for inspiration)
  • Listen to your favourite song
  • Step outside, take a 5-minute break from your phone or laptop

Things that take up to an hour:

  • Start to read a new book (Reasons To Stay Alive by Matt Haig is a firm favourite)
  • Have a bubble bath, or a long shower
  • Meditate (There are many apps to help you get started with this here)
  • Go for a walk/run
  • Call a friend
  • Go to the gym
  • Watch an episode of your favourite TV show
  • Take an even longer break from your phone or laptop

Things that can take longer than an hour:

  • Cook your favourite meal
  • Watch your favourite film
  • Meet up with a friend
  • Bake a cake
  • Take a nap
  • Clean your house
  • Have a social media detox – remove/mute anyone that doesn’t bring positivity to your newsfeeds

Long-term self-care practices

  • Make plans with friends/family, have something to look forward to
  • Set yourself some no-pressure goals, have something to work towards
  • Stay present-focused. Stay clear from ‘what ifs’
  • Don’t put so much pressure on yourself
  • Develop a daily skincare routine
  • Work on a daily routine that works for you, including getting a proper night’s sleep, regular healthy meals and acts of self-care.

Whilst a few of these things might make you feel better for a short time, it’s important to know that there is help available for people suffering and it’s perfectly OK to seek it! See a full list of help available throughout the UK here
