Our Building Futures programme provides employability support for those aged 19 – 24 in South Yorkshire, along with key digital qualifications.

Each learner receives individualised, tailored support to help them achieve their career goals and move closer to their dream job. Working with their own mentor and keyworker, they also have access to tailored packages of support to help build their future.

One learner who recently completed the programme was Emerson from Sheffield.

About Emerson

Emerson arrived on our Building Futures programme after a period of unemployment, but with a desire to not only boost his IT skills, but to kickstart a new career for himself.

I recently left my job of five years and realised that I wanted a proper career and something better for myself. This programme seemed like the perfect launchpad for that, and it was available at no cost for me.

Enjoyable experience

Throughout the course, Emerson and his fellow learners were given the opportunity to learn new skills in web design, graphic design, programming and games design. Emerson reflected on the aspects of the course he enjoyed the most, and how this has helped him solidify the types of career he wishes to pursue.

I most enjoyed the games design and programming units on the course. It made me realise what areas I want to get a career in and has pushed me to apply for these types of roles.

Key skills developed

Our Building Futures team in South Yorkshire are dedicated to improving the lives of our participants, with individual support provided by one of our learning support advisors for each participant on the programme. This is something which benefited Emerson, as well as helping to develop key soft skills that will help him move forward in his job search.

I've improved a lot on the course, with good time management and improved social skills. I believe I have learnt more in the past few weeks and made more development in all areas than the two years I spent in college.
