The benefits of distance learning

Beverly Velloza, a Special Needs Teaching Assistant at Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council, recently completed our Level 2 Children & Young People’s Mental Health qualification. This online course was completed via our distance learning route, which allows participants to complete units in their own time.

Mental health problems affect around 1 in 8 children and young people. This includes depression, anxiety and conduct disorder. Emotional wellbeing is just as important as a child’s mental health, therefore it is vital that those working with children and young people have a good understanding of the concepts, risk factors and impact of mental health.

What made you want to take part in this distance learning course?

The main reason I signed up to do the Children & Young People’s Mental health course was to extend my knowledge on the topic.

What did you enjoy most about this course?

The course content taught me new techniques that I could apply in my role to help those that have mental health illnesses.

What new skills and knowledge have you learned?

After completing this course, I learned how to recognise the signs of mental illness and understand how to approach those involved. The qualification provided some great resources, so I have access to contact information and organisations that can help to support children and their families.

Did you find that the course met your expectations?

I found it to be very informative and very interesting. The content and units kept me engaged throughout the duration of the course. The support from my assigned tutor was also excellent and she gave me lots of encouragement.

How has this course helped you progress in the workplace?

The course has helped me to recognise the signs that children and young people display that could be an indication of mental health. I also spoke to the headteacher about the course and she was very impressed by all of the content involved.

Would you recommend the distance learning courses to others?

Yes definitely. It is very interesting and easy to follow. It also goes in depth and covers a lot of content.

Why choose distance learning?

Distance learning is a method of teaching and gaining new knowledge that doesn’t require learners to go into a physical classroom environment. Instead, it allows learners to complete the course from the comfort and safety of their own home.

Our distance learning qualifications focus on progression within the workplace. As many employed individuals already have a busy work schedule, the distance learning route has proven to be a great option for educational development, allowing for flexibility around the learners schedule.

What are the costs?

These courses are fully funded by the Government to encourage employee development. This means that it comes at no cost to the learner or employer. Upon completion, learners will receive a certificate which also comes at no cost.

What is the eligibility criteria?

The B2W Group have upcoming courses in the West Midlands. This means those wanting to partake in a course will need to be residents of the West Midlands area. We also require learners to be 19+ to be eligible for the funding.

Those who are self employed are also eligible for the funding.

How do the courses work?

Each course will consist of an induction and masterclass sessions, where you will attend live sessions taught by industry professionals to gain an understanding of the course content. You will complete the remainder of the course through our online learning platform which contains all the course materials required.
